Do you know who Günter Grass was or really want to find out? Plan a day off and come with us in the great writer’s footsteps. We will take you round the most beautiful places in Gdańsk’s Wrzeszcz (Langfuhr) district, the Nobel Prize winner’s birthplace and the source of his inspiration. Our trip will follow the tracks of Grass’ biography, so let us meet near the Wrzeszcz train station and go to Lendziona Street. Our story begins at 5a Lendziona St. townhouse. We will take you to places which tour guides rarely mention. We will show you how charming Wrzeszcz can be: the gorgeous Sacred Heart Church (Kościół Najświętszego Serca Pana Jezusa) in 3 Zator-Przytockiego St. where little Günter was baptised. We will then go in the direction of Kuźniczki Park, a regenerated square with the remnants of an old brewery. Closed in 2001, this was the last such facility in Gdańsk and it gives us a great opportunity to learn the history of Gdańsk beer making. Continuing in Gunter’s footsteps, we will show you the school he went to, then we’ll turn left to Wybickiego Square. It is there, next to a sculpted fountain, that a small bench stands on which the figure of Oskar from The Tin Drum sits. Our trip will feature charming nooks and crannies, beautiful townhouses and places, perhaps slightly forgotten today yet very important to Günter Grass fans.
We guarantee that this trip will leave you filled with wonder, thrill and knowledge about the life and work of the genius German writer who had such strong ties to Gdańsk. Wait no longer and set aside a day to meet the Nobel Prize winner.
